1787	The Northwest Ordinance outlaws slavery in the Northwest Territories which later developed into Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
1818	Illinois is admitted as a free state.
1837	An anti-abolitionist mob murderers the Rev. Elijah Lovejoy in Alton, Ill.
